Moving EPIL into the Future – EPIL Board Proposes a Process of Consultation

The board meeting in Luzern June 15-17, 2012

Under the leadership of EPIL president Barbara Heyse Schaefer, Vienna, and vice-president Azra Ceric, Sarajevo, the EPIL international Board met in Lucerne, Switzerland from June 15 – 17, 2012.

The Board members reviewed the current programme and budgets and noted the difficulties in fundraising for EPIL Study Course III (2011 – 2013). They also planned the Closing Symposium, which will take place in Beirut, February 11, 2013, with the theme, “Democracy for Everyone!” , through which the Symposium will look at present processes of democratisation  from women’s perspectives. The Symposium will be held under the patronage of H.H. Catholicos Aram I of the Armenian Orthodox Church,  Catholicosate of Cilicia (Antelias, Lebanon) and will be open to the general public in Beirut.

The Board also approved plans for a publication to systematize and evaluate the experience of EPIL since its pilot project started in 2002.

At the end, the members of the Board had an intensive discussion on the future of EPIL based on a paper prepared by EPIL coordinators, Reinhild Traitler-Espiritu and
Teny Pirri-Simonian.

They decided to begin a process of broad consultations with its constituency:
Members of the EPIL association, national preparatory teams, students, alumni, academic team members and lecturers, all who have been close to the project as participants and financial supporters.

The Board will ask them to comment on a statement outlining options for the future. The process will start in early autumn and will continue until the next EPIL General Assembly in September 2013.
